Before we hop into the details of this closet update let me tell you what you’ll see. You will see dust and scratch marks on floor as well as scuff marks on my closet wall. This is not one of those picture perfect refreshes. This is one that will hopefully make you feel like refreshing your own closet is doable and doesn’t have to look picture perfect.
The photos you’ll see are “in progress shots” of my closet. They were taken after I swapped out all of the store hangers that come with the clothes when you buy them for these grown up hangers.
Yes..I did a grown up thing and invested in some hangers which is what sparked this entire closet update.
After buying the hangers and getting my clothes on them I decided to organize them. I organized my clothes by season, piece and color using the following grouping style.
- Short sleeve
- Long sleeve
- Sweaters
- Dresses
- Skirts
- Active/Gym Wear
- Tank Tops
- Leggings
- Blazers
- Jackets
- Jeans
- Slacks
After grouping the pieces I grouped any matching color families. I ended up using about eighty hangers at the time I took this photo but I also bought one more box. After washing laundry I realized I had a few more pieces and was out of hangers. I want a unified look in my closet so although I only needed five more hangers, I bought another box so everything looked the same.
Now lets talk about what I did to the closet floor and upper shelf.
Upper Shelf
On the upper shelf I used wire baskets to corral all of my scarfs and head wraps. I have a lot of them so that required three baskets. The baskets I used come in white, gold and rose gold sets. The size and shape are prefect for my folded scarves and small clutches.
Closet Floor
On the closet floor I took all of my shoes out of the boxes and lines them up by purpose.
- Gym/Athletic
- Errands/Casual
- Open Toe Heels
- Boots
- Booties
- Slides
- Slippers
My closet has looked exactly like this since May. No cap.
Taking time to organize it has made me more organized. It’s made choosing my clothes each day a joy and stress free. I can see where everything is and it doesn’t feel cluttered.
Picking my outfit and accessories is an experience now rather than a chore. Having my things on display makes it feel like I’m shopping my closet to create my desired look rather than decluttering until I find something to wear.
The last piece of this closet refresh will be to paint the walls and add some kind of mural or focal wall. I’m thinking about using my Cricut to duplicate this tribal print but on a larger scale.
Let me know in the comments what y’all think.
