There are just a few more weeks for us to enjoy the outdoors during the daytime without melting from the heat. The south gets super hot after May making it unbearable to be outside for long.
To make the most of this perfect weather, I planned a backyard game day with my husband and kids.
The kids had exams all week at school so I want to make the weekend really fun for them.
My husband planned on grilling this weekend so my plan changed from being just a game day, into a full on barbecue. Since he was cooking, I decided to make a dessert for our game day.
I have been craving ice-cream all week, especially strawberry shortcake ice-cream sundaes. I’ve never made them before, but I could see them in my mind. Knowing what I wanted them to look and taste like, I went by Publix up the street for the ingredients I needed. While there I stocked up on Viva® Towels for our game day dessert and Viva® Vantage® Towels to use out by the grill.
Viva® makes the best paper towels for big messes. The Viva® Towels are like little soft wash cloths, perfect for hands and face messes while the Viva® Vantage® Towels are more of a thick scrubbing cloth perfect for wiping and prepping the grill grates.
Once the grill was clean, I set up our game area. I layered several beach towels on the deck to lay on. I let the kids pick a game and set it up in the center. I used one large beach towel as the dessert area. Once that was set up, I started prepping strawberry shortcake ice-cream sundaes. Here’s how I made them.
INGREDIENTS
- pound cake (you can also use angel food cake)
- strawberry ice-cream
- whipped cream
- strawberries
INSTRUCTIONS
1. I cut my cake into half inch inch thick cubes. Then, I cut the tops off a few strawberries, and slice them into cubes as well. Now it’s time to assemble the sundaes.
2. Next, I set the ice-cream, cake, strawberries, whipped cream and silverware on the deck so everyone could assemble their own sundaes.
How to Assemble
- I placed a few cake cubes into the bottom of a small glass, and then scooped in about a tablespoon of whipped cream.
- Then I added a layer of sliced strawberries, another layer of whipped cream and topped that with a few more cake cubes.
- On top of the cake, I added a large scoop of strawberry ice-cream and a garnished it with a strawberry slice.
Once the dessert was prepped, I bought everything out to the deck. Where we enjoyed dessert, games and each other.
I kept paper towels nearby for spills, which was inevitable while eating ice-cream in the sun. We had such a fun time and hope you are inspired to plan a backyard game day with your family.

Wow! Your strawberry shortcake sundaes look delicious! We make strawberry shortcake sundaes with shortbread crumbles. I just crumble up shortbread in the bottom of the dish and sprinkle some more on top!
Shortbread crumbles are a great idea too! I'll bet they add a sweet and yummy crunch toe this dessert.
