How to Dye Your Hair a Flaming Red at Home

I get to experience some of the most breathtaking fall scenery in the south. Right now the leaves are beautiful hues of greens, browns, oranges, yellows and reds.

The scenery has me excited for fall and has inspired me to try a bold new look. During the cooler months I love to style my hair in braids, twists and up-do’s which help it retain length. While planning my hairstyle for this month I thought it would look so dope with a bold pop of color. Inspired by the fall leaves, I decided to dye my hair using the Schwarzkopf Color Ultime Flaming Reds in the color Mahogany Red.

To start, I parted my hair into four equal sections. Then mixed the color cream and developer lotion together in the developer bottle. With gloved hands I applied the color to my entire head. I let the color sit before rinsing and washing my hair. To seal in moisture and shine, I finished up by conditioning my hair with the conditioning cream.

After drying my hair I loved the color, but it did not bond to and show up like I wanted on every strand. The color mostly came through on my roots. While I loved the color that showed up on my roots, I wanted it to be bolder on the ends of my hair as well.

To style my hair and make the color pos I parted my hair into five sections. Two section at the back, two on the sides and one at the crown. I made four flat-twist braids up toward the crown using the parted hair at the sides and back of my head. Once they were secured with a bobby pin, I misted the ends of my hair with a temporary colored hairspray to get the color to pop even more.

I’ve since washed the temporary color out and have been rocking just the red roots styled in braids and twists. The color is still vibrant and my hair amazingly shiny even after washing it twice. The style turned out so dope. I love this look and plan on re-coloring the ends in a few weeks for more impact.

  1. Wow, this color looks great on you. I currently have my hair in braids so no color for me, but I’m always trying to find a color that will cover my gray strands.

  2. That’s a really pretty red! I see what you mean about the roots. The last time I dyed my hair at home it was an ombre that went from black to a chestnut blonde color on the ends. I loved it, but I think I’ll leave it to the pros next time.

  3. I like the color, I have never dyed my hair before but I love getting the red color when I get braid extension in my hair. Unfortunately in So cal we don’t really get Fall but I love to see the leaves changing colors.

  4. Your hair looks great. I’m not sure flaming red would look good on me, but it looks great on you. Thanks for introducing me to this brand.

  5. You did a great job. I am no good at doing my hair at all. I love the red on you.

  6. The color looks beautiful on you. It brings out your undertones. I’ve only dyed my hair twice, but if I do it again, I’d go for red.

  13. Wow, I love the red! I’ve always wanted to go the DIY route, but since a highlighting disaster the night before my engagement photos, I’ve been too scared to try again, lol.

  14. Yours looks amazing!!! Girl, the last time I tried to color my hair at home, you should have SEEN our bathroom. I thought my hubby would kill me LOL I think I’ll keep going to the salon for now!

  16. That red looks amazing on you! I used to have bright red hair when I was in high school. Mine was a bit easier because I was going from blonde to red. I also helped a friend with black hair add some red streaks once.

  17. Love the change! I just went really bold this past weekend with a red violet for the fall. It seems fall is the perfect time to really choose a vibrant color to have fun with your hair! #client

  18. Your hair came out great! I dyed my hair “tail light” red in the ninth grade (my hair is blonde) I thought my mom was going to kill me.
