My husband and I have been working out for over a decade as a married couple. We’ve always been active, but with the growth of our family our waistlines grew as well. After having our youngest son, we got serious about our health and started working together toward a common fitness goal.
First we started exercising together and then mapped out meal plans we could both stick to. My part in the planning was finding better for us weekly meals, while my husband focused on finding the best fitness supplements.
Protein quickly became one of the key supplements when we started exercising. At first, I didn’t understand why he wasn’t buying the cheapest brands he could find. Initially I thought all protein products were the same, but good thing my husband did his research because they aren’t the same. Some protein powders are full of junk ingredients, taste nasty and don’t mix well.
When choosing protein or any other health supplements you want to choose ones with quality ingredients. The results we see in the gym are directly related to the quality of the food we eat and the supplements we use. We went through a few brands before adding Optimum Nutrition® to our favorites list.
What is Optimum Nutrition® Whey Protein Isolate?
Optimum Nutrition® Whey Protein Isolate is a high-quality protein that helps build muscle when combined with exercise. Building muscle is especially hard for my husband and I because we have high metabolisms. That’s where whey protein helps. Protein helps the body recover and provides Amino Acids to build muscle. In other words, when we work out we burn a lot of calories and fat. We also push our muscles to the limit, so protein helps refuel our body with good calories and fat after our workouts.
We alternate between the Gold Standard Optimum Nutrition® 100% Whey and Optimum Nutrition® Whey Protein Isolate. The flavors taste delicious and the powders have great mixabiity. Each serving has 25 grams of protein and between 120- 130 calories when combine with 8 ounces of water.
A big reason we use Optimum Nutrition® is because it’s free of artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners. It’s also gluten free and “banned substance” tested which is important to our health and to those who are competitive athletes subject to anti-doping testing.
Optimum Nutrition® Whey Protein Isolate comes in chocolate and vanilla, but can be used as the foundation for a variety of shakes, smoothie bowls and breads. On a typical day Germaine and I will make a quick smoothie within an hour of working out, using whatever fresh ingredients we have on hand. Here’s one we recently made using Optimum Nutrition® Whey Protein Isolate vanilla flavor.

Another product in the Optimum Nutrition® line is the Optimum Nutrition® Performance Energy powder in grape and watermelon flavor. Performance energy powders are a good replacement for my pre-workout cup of coffee during the summer months. It’s also good when my husband needs a quick pick me up before a late afternoon workout. By the end of the work day, he’s sometimes dragging and Optimum Nutrition® Performance Energy powder gives him fuel from 100mg of caffeine which is equal to 1 cup of coffee and 3 grams of muscle supporting amino acids.
I plan to vlog a few recipes using this powder so make sure you’re following me on Instagram where I share my fitness video updates.
The last thing I’m adding to our my meal plan are these Optimum Nutrition®Protein Cake Bites. These Birthday Cake flavored Protein Cake Bites taste just as good as a high calorie candy bar, but with ingredients that are way better. These whipped protein snacks come either coated with yogurt or chocolate flavored frosting, and have 20 grams of protein in each 3-cake serving. We generally make our desserts from scratch so we can control the ingredients, but now have one that we can grab from the grocery store when we want to switch things up.
The primary ingredients Optimum Nutrition®Protein Cake Bites is milk and whey proteins. I’ve had the Birthday Cake, but there’s also Red Velvet, Chocolate Dipped Cherry, and Chocolate Frosted Donut bites.
By making exercise and smart food choices an important part of our lifestyle, we’ve been able to not only strengthen our bodies, but our marriage as well. We exercise, plan a prep meals together each week and enjoy the time we spend together in the kitchen and gym.
If I could give couples any advice in this area, it would be to sit down and decide on a common health goal. Make it part of your families mission, then put together a plan for exercise and one for meals. Give yourself grace as you start your new habits and have fun together.
