Today is grocery shopping and food prep day. We have our lists made and are ready to pre-cook our meals for the week.
When cooking ahead, before shopping is the best time for us to clean out and prep the refrigerator. That’s usually when it’s emptiest. Every couple of weeks, I use the day before shopping to quick-clean and tidy up the fridge. Once it’s clean and neat, we can cook our weekly meals and store everything with ease.
I’m going to tell you how I do my quick clean, but keep in mind, this is not a deep clean. It’s a spot cleaning that doesn’t require me to empty the contents of the whole refrigerator. This type of cleaning is what I do in between deep cleanings to tackle spills and crumbs. So let me share a few tips for keeping your fridge neat and clean.
1. Discard any and all products that are expired or you just aren’t going to eat.
2. Move as much as you can to one shelf in the refrigerator and wipe the empty shelves.
3. Once shelves are clean, line them with contact paper. Contact paper is a great way to make cleanup easier next time and make your shelves look pretty.
4. Replace and organize the contents in the refrigerator.
5. Store food in airtight, 100% leak proof, crystal clear, stackable Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™ containers.
Once the refrigerator is clean, I can fill it with our grocery haul and pre-cooked meals.
In my refrigerator, the top two shelves are the most important. I designate each shelf to hold specific items we’ll need throughout the week. The top shelf is fruit and snacks. The second shelf is where we store our precooked meals. The lower shelves and drawers are for dairy, sandwich supplies and for thawing foods.
After pre-cooking each meal, I store the food in Rubbermaid® containers. My favorite right now are the new Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™premium food storage containers. They are crystal clear, sleek and stackable. The containers can be purchased separately or as a 10 piece set at most Walmart stores.
What I love about these is how easy it makes identifying the contents. I have colored storage containers and while they match my kitchen color scheme, I always have to open them to see what’s inside. These Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™solves that problem. Another great thing about these is they are stain and odor resistant. I’ve never had a problem with odors in my storage containers, but stains…yes! I make pasta and nachos almost every week and those two dishes are major culprits for staining my storage containers. With the Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™ containers, that problem is solved. No more red-hued storage containers for me!
I really love how these containers stack too, making it easy for me to group the items for individual meals together. And the biggest difference with the new Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™containers is they are 100% leak proof. Nothing is spilling out of these containers once it’s sealed. I feel like my food is also going to stay fresher with these because when I’m sealing it, I actually hear air being pushed out of the container.
I really love seeing my refrigerator clean and neat, don’t you? If you get these, don’t even buy pieces, just grab the 10 pc. Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™ set so you have all of the containers you need to prep a full meal. The set comes with five containers and lids in various sizes. Rubbermaid® BRILLIANCE™ is available nationwide at Walmart, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Amazon and fine retailers.
My husband absolutely loves these containers. After our Sunday meal prep, our refrigerator is jam-packed. I mean every crevice is occupied by something. Now when he looks through the containers on the meal shelf, he can easily find what he needs, grab it and go.
