I’m reading a new book this month that’s challenging me to think differently about how I decorate my home. The book, Change Your Home, Change Your Life™ with Color by Moll Anderson is a book slash journal that’s helping me decide which colors inspire me most and how I can incorporate them into my home decor.
I’m coming up on 15 years as homeowners and one of the things I never knew before buying my home is how challenging it could be to decorate it. For several years, it was hard to figure out what would look best together so I left the walls painted in the same builders beige and decorated in mostly dark colors. My guest bathroom was one of those rooms where I’d chosen colors I’d seen used in most homes in my area. I never really felt excited about this space.
Then one day, I decided to incorporate the colors I loved into my decor and I started seeing my home differently.
My life changed because I was surrounding myself with the things and colors I loved. Being surrounded by meaningful color and decor began to inspire me.
This is exactly what I’m discovering by reading Moll Anderson’s book, Change Your Home, Change Your Life™ with Color: What’s Your Color Story. In her book, Moll talks about how colors affect our moods, behaviors, and emotions. I never really verbalized that, but it’s true. This was the case when my bedroom was painted in gray and black. I hated being in there. When I painted the walls in a white, the room felt bright and alive. My room is so full of light now that it energizes me rather than making feel sluggish.
Just about every room in my house tells a color story about my family. The story our home tells is a story of tranquility, but I know the story isn’t complete. As homes age, they need repairs and updates so the story we create in our home is an ongoing one.
I’m going to work through Moll’s book during the month of March to push myself to incorporate more of my favorite colors into my home this year even if just in small ways.
In the chapters, Moll walks me through thirteen color lessons and includes journal questions to work through. I love a book that’s interactive and I’ve been enjoying learning how “Pops of color” here and there can change the mood of my space, wardrobe and my life.
In one of my favorite parts of the book Moll, encourages readers to look at their closet to get color inspiration. She says the colors we tend to wear are often colors we’d love in our homes. One of my favorite colors right now is the coral color in this top. I think it’s absolutely gorgeous against my skin and it makes me happy. I’d love to see this color more often.
I’m super excited about the small decor changes I’m going make as a result of reading and working through Change Your Home, Change Your Life™ with Color: What’s Your Color Story.
My first project will be my office shelf makeover. Once I finish the book and the makeover, I’ll post a before and after.
