Do it Yourself

July 2013 Nail Polish Picks

Has it or has it not been an amazing year for color?

That’s been especially true for nail polish. The top three mid-level brands that have taken the lead on popularity this year have been essie, OPI and Sally Hansen.

They’ve come out with some visually appealing colors this year and it’s been a fun month of experimenting with them. Three of the colors I wore this month were new and one was a long time favorite.

1. Cover Girl Boundless Color in “Rose Coral” #517

Cover Girl Boundless Color

The name it self should give you and indication of the popularity this color hold. “Coral” is the new black. It’s popped up in home decor, clothes and nail enamel.

In fact, this color is my long time favorite because I’ve had it for three years. Yup…I knew it would be a winner back in 2010 which is why I bough three bottles.  I am down to my last bottle and a half and continue to get complements on the color every time I wear it.

This is a creme polish and it goes on smooth in two coats. If you follow my 5 Step DIY Manicure, you can get 5-7 days worth of wear out for this nail polish before it starts chipping.

2. Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear “Green With Envy” #110

This is the same color is featured in my 5 Step DIY Manicure. It’s a bold fun color for this year especially with so many clothing and accessories having pops of color these days.

This color polish does not stand out as you might expect. In fact, it compliments many of the blues, greens and yellows found in fashion.

The Sally Hansen Hard as Nail Xtreme Wear polish is thick but smooth and provides about two coats of coverage in one coat. Yes it’s that thick but it has the ability to spread just about as smoothly as a thinner polish.

3. Sally Hansen Hard as Nail Xtreme Wear “Blue Me Away” #130

This color really pops. The blue against my skin and goes great with a lot of the colors I already have in my closet.

If you’ve been shopping for clothes or home decor you’ve probably already spotted colors in the turquoise family everywhere. This is a fun color to wear this year. It can be incorporated in small or large ways by wearing it as a solid or introducing it in spurts like on your nails.

4. Sally Hansen Hard as Nail Xtreme Wear “Mint Sorbet” #340

I love this color. I’ve worn two different lines and loved them both. I didn’t have time to do my own nails before the wedding in Baltimore so while at the nail salon I came across Essie “mint candy apple”.

The color was a pretty pastel in the green and blue family but more in the blue. Some mints I see are more greenish in hue but for my complexion, I prefer the bluer hue.

I set out to find a similar color or the same. The essie brand is $8 but I wanted to see if I could get the same color for cheaper. Well the Sally Hansen Hard as Nail Xtreme Wear “Mint Sorbet” #340 was buy one get one 50% off making in less than $1.75 a bottle.

I was so happy I saved money but even happier that the color was so similar.

I really had a great time wearing these colors and caring for my nails this month. To get a sneak peak of what colors I may potentially post about next follow me on instagram.
