That’s something I have to fight against and I know I’m not alone. Do you ever have a busy week and skip the very things that fortify you just to get everything crossed off of your to-do list?

I fall into that trap a lot. I skip meals and the gym, knowing those are the two things I need to stay balanced and handle the things life throws at me. I’m getting a lot better at handling busy seasons in life due to better preparation.

One of the worst things I can do for myself on a busy day or week is to not prepare which is why I sit down on Sundays to plan my week.

I’ve learned the hard way how devasting having no plan can be mentally, emotionally and physically. When I’m super busy and don’t plan accurately, I skip the very things I need to make it through the day like working out and eating. 

So how do I prepare for a busy week?

1. I plan my meals and snacks according to how busy I’ll be. If I’ll be on the road more during the week I take something like mess free on-the-go Special K Snack Bites instead of yogurt or fruit. If I’ll be working from home more, Special K Snack Bars, fruit or yogurt a great to eat at my desk.

Eating regularly when I’m busy keeps me from getting headaches, irritable and short tempered. In addition to making sure I’ve planned my weekly meals, I plan my snacks too.

In between meals when I get a craving for some crunchy, salty or sweet the New Special K Protein Snack Bites and Special K Nourish Snack Bites flavors are perfect. I use these especially when I’m on the road. At the start of the week, I stash, a pack of the yummy, poppable snack bites in the car. Whether working at my desk, running errands or working out at the gym, the Special K Protein and Special K Nourish Snack Bars are a great go-to. At the start of a busy week, I put a few bars in a container on my desk and in the pockets in my gym bag. When the cravings hit in between meals these wholesome bars taste so good and are full of real ingredients, like quinoa, pistachios, almonds and dark chocolate.

2. I prepare for the gym the night before by taking out my clothes and making sure my essentials are in my gym bag.

I lay out everything I’m going to wear in a pile on my bedroom chair and place my gym bag and tennis shoes near the chair.

3. I precook two casseroles on Sunday so we have something easy to heat and eat during the week. Casseroles are super easy to make and if you have a big enough pan, you can make two different casseroles that can cover as many as five days. My family doesn’t mind eating the same thing twice in one week as long as it’s tasty.

4. I brief my family on our schedule and let everyone know our week will be busy. This is so no one is caught off guard and understands they may have to pitch in help a little bit more. It also lets everyone know our routine may be a little different.

Having these routines in place for busy weeks helps me take better care of me. With these few steps, I’m able to focus on my tasks, still get the exercise I need and eat healthy, no matter how busy my schedule is.

  3. Precooked meals are the way the go. They save tons of time, and help me to eat healthier. Exercise also needs to be planned as yiu mentioned.

  8. I'm getting much better at planning for my week than I used to be. I created a 'launch pad' in my kitchen where everything that is needed for the next day gets placed there the night before. I can't believe the difference it has made in my life and I no longer forget things like I used to. Also, I prepare our veggie and fresh fruit snacks for the weeks' lunches on Sunday. I sure cuts down on the morning chaos of trying to get out the door on time when all I have to do is reach into the fridge and grab a container of healthy snacks.

  9. These are awesome tips! I need to get in the habit of pre-cooking meals. Our weeks are always so busy and cooking is the LAST thing either of us wants to do. Got any specific recipes we can try?

Especially for eating healthy – it's when we don't plan that we fall for fast foods…I hope you're also scheduling in at least 5 minutes a day for your mental health – a quick meditation where you stop and appreciate someone or something in your life can make you feel great!

    • Definitely got that 5 minutes covered. My day starts with reading the Bible and prayer. I also keep a gratitude journal and prayer journal.
