My monthly beauty budget is $20. Ten of which goes to my gym membership and another ten toward beauty products. This month, I used $10 of my budget on a box of Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color in Rich Caviar from Dollar General to color my hair before restyling it.
I’m a 4C Naturalista, and Dollar General is among my top places to shop for hair care products. They’re usually the first to stock new products, specifically for women of color, and they always have a great selection when ordering online.
My grays are making their bi-monthly appearance, and while I know my entire head will be full of gray hair one day, today isn’t that day. I’m retouching my roots with Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color in Rich Caviar. This line is my top pick, because it gives me 100% gray coverage—plus, it gives even color from root to tip.
I also use it because my hair is prone to dryness. My strands are highly porous, so I specifically look for hair color that protects and repairs my coils during the coloring process. Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color with enhanced K·Bond-Plex™ repairs the inner hair structure and coats the hair’s surface after the coloration process—leaving you with strong and healthy looking hair.
I’ve colored my hair many times using Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color, and I feel like my coils always end up soft, moisturized, manageable, and with the perfect shade. I feel like a $10 box at Dollar General is a steal for salon-quality results at home.
Preparing to Color My Hair
The first thing I did was remove everything from the box and read the instructions about five times. No matter how many times I color my hair at home, I always act as though it’s my first time. Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color is designed for easy at-home application with great results when you follow the instructions carefully.
I started by retouching the gray coils around my hairline and the ones directly down the middle of my head.
These areas have the largest concentration of grays and are highly visible with most of my hairstyles.
The Application Process
I unraveled my twists, then separated my hair into four sections to apply the protective Pre-Color Serum that conditions the hair before the coloring process. Next, I mixed the Color Creme with the Developer Lotion and started coloring my hair with the Keratin Rich Caviar shade. While applying the color, my roots were easy to part with the developer bottle tips, and the color went on smoothly.
While applying the product, I was surprised to see how defined it helped make my coils. That indicated to me that my hair was saturated with moisture from the product.
After coloring, I washed my hair with a high-moisture coconut shampoo. Next, I towel dried my hair and applied the Schwarzkopf® K-Bond Plex® conditioner that came in the hair color box. I left the conditioner in for two minutes and then rinsed my hair with cool water.
I was anxious to see the results, so I blow dried my hair and flat twisted it into this updo with wavy bangs.
This style is very workout-friendly and will last in my hair for several days. To maintain it, I cover it at night with a satin scarf and moisturize my scalp as needed with a light oil.
Between exercising regularly and keeping my hair healthy, I feel most excited about my reflection, which makes me more excited about life. My $20 monthly beauty budget — $10 for Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color and my $10 monthly gym membership — is worth every penny to make sure I look and feel my best.
Now that I’ve shared a behind-the-scenes look at my frugal beauty secret, I’ll share where to find the best deal on Schwarzkopf® Keratin Color.
