How I Clear Up My Eczema | Glowy, Healthy Skin Edition

I hosted a live video chat on my Instagram channel earlier this week sharing how eczema has affected not only me but my children for years. Eczema has been a skin problem that has plagued me and my children and I have been on a diligent search to find a solution that would clear up the irritating breakouts.

I’m not saying I’ve found a cure, but I’ve definitely found that the following solutions have reduced our eczema flare ups dramatically.

Use an apple cider vinegar rinse as needed.

I’ve found that by using an apple cider vinegar rinse on my hair and skin, most of my eczema has dried up as a result.

I typically mix one part ACV to one part water in a bottle. My eczema is concentrated to my scalp, so after co-washing, I’ll pour some over my scalp and rinse with cool water. To treat my scalp in between washes, I use a spray bottle to spritz affected areas. I have not had to do this in almost a year. Before implementing the strategies I’m sharing today I had to apply the ACV rinse almost weekly.

Avoid harsh soaps and shampoos.

I have just about stopped using soaps with strong detergents and unnatural fragrances. I didn’t realize that harsh soaps and shampoos were drying out and irritating my skin.

My current routine includes showering with fragrance-free Dove bar soap and Rituals Shower Oil. The Fortune Oil’ has the scent of Sweet Orange and Cedar.

I rub the oil directly on my skin, and it creates a silky soft foam when it comes into contact with water. The Fortune Oil’ cleans and hydrates my skin at the same time while showering. I’ve learned that oiling my skin while it’s damp helps seal in moisture while my pores are open.

My eczema is concentrated to my scalp. Before my new routine, I’d get terrible flare ups that would leave my scalp caked with flakes, irritated and stinging.

I tried shampooing my hair more and moisturizing almost daily to soothe my irritated and often inflamed scalp. One day I decided to stop using shampoos with strong oil stripping agents. Then I stopped using shampoos altogether. In place of shampooing my hair, I started exclusively co-washing my hair. I co-wash using oils and conditioners. They both soften and moisturize my hair during the cleaning process. Since making that change a little over a year ago, my scalp has not had any eczema flare ups. If I notice any build up, I saturate my scalp with my ACV rinse and shampoo using a mild product.

I’m using the 100% organic Skinerals shampoo, conditioner and Argan oil. The Argan oil is used on my hair and skin and has definitely been the primary contributor to my glowy skin lately.

Hair routine: I mix a few drops into my conditioner before co-washing.

Nail care

In addition to my skin, I focus on using products that strengthen and regenerate my skin and nails. I take 10,000 MCG’s of Biotin per day and use products like Lauren B. Beauty Nail Growth Serum with Biotin in it. Since using Biotin I’ve found that my skin has been glowy and my hair super healthy.

My son struggled with eczema on his skin and scalp since he was a baby. Ever since I started researching the products we use on our skin, both of us have seen some amazing results. It takes a little time to find the right products in your price range, but like me, I know many of you who have dealt with Eczema are willing to pay a little more for products if it brings relief.

What products are you using on you hair or skin that makes you feel pampered?

  2. My son has level 3 eczema. So he is at the stage of having to see a dermatologist. We use aquaphor lotion liberally and bathe him in oatmeal then use aquaphor bath wash.

  5. I like the idea of using apple cider vinegar for eczema. I have occasional breakouts, but nothing like the ones I used to get years ago. The solution that worked for me was to use Castile soap, instead of perfumed soaps or gels.

  6. Apple Cider Vinegar has many uses and I never thought about it for eczema. I have several friends that suffer from eczema. I will certainly share this information with them.
