This project was long overdue, but Germaine and I have finally begun tackling it. We came up with the idea on a Tuesday, but before we started, we shopped for the supplies we needed and mapped out our game plan. Our goal was to pull up over 800 square feet of carpet and install a gorgeous honey brown laminate wood flooring. We started in the living room and kept going until it was all out.
To get the job done, here are some of the main supplies we used.
— circular saw (15 amp +)
— 140 tooth blade (6)
— work bench
— hand saw (large & small)
— dust mask
— shop vac
— floor install kit
— wood adhesive
— knee pads
Before we started this project, we knew it would produce a lot of trash that my weekly sanitation crew wouldn’t haul away. Old carpet and laminate flooring scraps aren’t things we can place curbside for pickup. Our options were to load up our van with the trash and take several trips back and forth to the city dump or use Waste Management’s Bagster® bag.
When we replaced the floors downstairs we took multiple trips to the dump which ate up time and energy. So this time we bought the Bagster® bag from our local home improvement store. The Bagster® bag is available at most home improvement retailers and you can go to www.thebagster.com to find a store near you.
The Bagster®bag holds up to 3,300 pounds of debris and has a rectangular shape similar to a dumpster.
The size is perfect for small to medium projects or for kitchen & bathroom remodels, garage & basement cleanups, moving preparation, window & door replacements, etc. The bag is set up somewhere on your property until you are ready for it to be picked up. Pickup is scheduled online and the cost is based on your area.
As we took up carpet, padding, and staples, we placed them in the Bagster® bag set up in our driveway. The demo was so quick since we didn’t have to make several one-hour drives back and forth to the dump.
Pickup was seamless too. After filing the bag to capacity, I went online and scheduled pick up Wednesday evening and was promised pickup within three days. On Friday evening someone from Waste Management pulled up and hauled away the bag.
By this time we were pretty done installing flooring in my office, the living room, and hallway. The project was turning out to be everything we imagined. We still have two rooms left to finish, and should have them completed by next Thursday.
Here’s a photo of the living room before we started the project and what it looks like now.
A lot of you messaged me on social media after seeing my live videos about the carpet. Many of you thought the carpet was in great shape for it being here 17 years. I have to say it’s the sunlight and my camera that makes it look better than what it does in person. It’s stained and isn’t soft to lay on at all. The stains and allergens were our biggest motivator for taking them up. We would have even replaced it with newer carpet, but we don’t know how to install carpet.
We truly love the way the floors turned out and are looking forward to using this space.
