The perfect high puff is a sought after style in the natural hair community. Today, I’ll show you how my wash routine using Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner from Dollar General sets the stage for this flawless style. This post has been sponsored by Head & Shoulders. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This last month or two, a lot of my attention has been focused on getting my son moved into Princeton for his freshman year. I’ve traveled back and forth between the Northeast and Southeast, checking out school and later getting him moved in. With all the back-to-school tasks, travel and moving, I haven’t had time to give my hair the TLC it normally gets. I usually wash my hair once a week, but in the picture below, when I was in New Jersey, it had been three weeks since my hair had been washed. By then, I was tired of wearing protective styles and turbans.
I knew that when I got back home, I would have to carve time out for my hair care routine if it was going to get done. I have to fly out to see my son again and this time, I want it to wear a cute hairstyle. When I talked to my daughter earlier this week, she told me she likes my hair styled in a puff so that’s how I ended up with today’s style.
This puff is a super low-maintenance style and one that’s great for traveling. Before I could pull the style off, I needed a few hair care supplies I didn’t have on hand. I noticed some dandruff around my hairline and remembered Dollar General has a new Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner that I wanted to try.
It’s always fun shopping for new hair care products at Dollar General. They have a great selection of products I use and this week, they had the new Head & Shoulders products at the front of the store in their own display. That made it easy for me to grab what I needed and get back home to start on my hair.

Prep Stage: Detangle & Separate
To prep my 4C hair for this style, I started off by detangling my hair. When I took down my twists, I misted my hair with a mix of water and conditioner before detangling it with a tangle tamer hair tool. Once my hair was detangled, I sectioned it into four parts. I part my hair before shampooing because 4C hair has the tightest curl pattern of all the curly hair textures and is the most fragile. Trying to part it while wet and tangled is a nightmare which can turn catastrophic once shampoo is added. Taking the time to detangle and separate before shampooing and conditioning is key to an easy wash day.
Washing & Conditioning
Since my hair had been in twists for three weeks, I had some dandruff around my hairline at the front of my head and nape of my neck that came from wearing a turban for three weeks. To make sure I had a clean scalp and manageable hair, I used Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner. Head & Shoulders is my most recommended “must-have dandruff product for 4C hair”.
I’ve tried some of the higher priced dandruff products and came back to Head & Shoulders for several reasons: it’s reasonably priced, available at Dollar General and it nourishes my scalp instead of just preventing dandruff. No matter what your hairstyle preference, Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner has hair and scalp benefits that improve the look and health of your hair, making all your styles more manageable.
Some of the other products I’ve used have stripped my hair and scalp of moisture, making it harder for me to style my hair after washing. Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender renews and nourishes my scalp, leaving it shiny and manageable for the styling process. Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender shampoo gives me the same deep scalp cleaning I get from the original but with a more refreshing and soothing scent. When using a dandruff shampoo, my goal is to treat my scalp too, not just my hair, which is why I section my hair in the prep stage.
Moisturize & Dry
After washing and conditioning my hair with Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender, I moisturize my hair with a styling cream and let it air dry in a couple of chunky two-strand twists. It takes my hair about 24-hours to completely air dry before I can style it, but it’s worth the wait to get this full-bodied puff. If I take a shortcut and blow-dry my hair, my puff doesn’t look as compact and full because the stretched curls aren’t compact. Taking the extra time to let my hair air dry and get the look I was going for is worth the wait. After twisting my hair, I allow it to dry overnight. By the next day, I’m able to style it.
Once my hair is completely dry, I unravel my chunky twists and separate them. Next, I fluff the roots at the crown of my head. As I’m prepping my hair, I make sure there are no signs of dandruff around my hairline. My hairline and puff are the stars of this style, which is why I washed and conditioned using Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner.
I didn’t want any unsightly flakes taking away from my look. Once my hair is picked out and full, I use a stretchable headband to pull the puff into place and use gel to smooth out the part of my hair that’s brushed up into the puff. To make my hair look smooth, I brush some gel into my hair and tie a scarf on for about 10 minutes until the gel is dry.
Taking time to pamper my scalp in between travel and mom’ing was so needed. Head & Shoulders Calming Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner has my hair looking great and my scalp feeling healthy.
